Abstract

1322686 Electro-chemical analysis LICENTIA-PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-GmbH 1 March 1972 [10 March 1971 11 Sept 1971 15 Jan 1972] 9604/72 Heading G1N Apparatus for Coulter-type particle analysis comprises two orifices in series as shown in Fig. 1, with a coaxial sample-feed-nozzle as described in Specification 1271708. This provides improved hydrodynamic focusing in the second orifice and enables particles with different volumes, or shapes or deforming properties may be determined by the relative amplitudes and/or durations of the pulses derived from the two apertures. The apparatus is particularly suitable for the estimation of lencocytes and erythrocytes in the blood. Erythrocytes are elastic and change shape due to pressure of the "focusing" electrolyte (see 15 in Fig. 2, (not shown)). Construction Fig. 3 The orifices 5, 7, and the jet 17 (formed by drilled sapphires) may be held co-axially and spaced on a wire while being mounted by melting into a glass tube 22. The tube has a conical outer surface to mate with holes inthe partitions 2, 3. Alternatively the partition 2 may be omitted and the electrode 10 mounted in the chamber 6.
