Abstract

1322336 Twisting and impregnating yarns; tyre cords DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 29 Sept 1970 [11 Oct 1969] 50033/69 Headings D1F D1W and D1T Composite cord or yarn is made by applying an impregnant e.g. an aqueous dispersion of an elastomer such as styrene/butadiene/vinyl pyridine terpolymer and the ingredients necessary to form a formaldehyde resin such as formaldehyde and resorcinol, to a continuous filament yarn and subsequently combining the treated yarn with another yarn. Some excess impregnant from the first yarn migrates to the second yarn and is deposited between the foldings of the resultant impregnated cord. As shown, untwisted yarn 18 fed from nip roller apparatus 24 passes through a dipping bath 20 of the impregnant, excess thereof being removed by nip rollers 19. The yarn then passes up a hollow spindle 13 on leaving which it is combined or doubled with an initially twisted yarn 14 ballooning off a bobbin 11 and untwisted by rotation of the spindle. The yarns pass through a chamber 27 which confines impregnant sprayed off the yarns as doubling occurs and is drained by means of a plug 28. Impregnated cord 23 is dried by passage through an air oven 26 and wound on take-up apparatus 25.
