Abstract

1322302 Cathode ray storage tubes GTE SYLVANIA Inc 11 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 6598/72 Heading H1D A storage target 43, Fig. 1 is seated on an annular first metallic member 35 against which it is pressed by resilient means 63 acting on a planar surface 57 of a second metallic member which is spaced from the first member to form a thermal barrier which protects the target from heat applied to the envelope to seal it to a lead or to another envelope portion. The target 43 may be a monolithic silicon wafer provided on its exposed surface with minute islands of silicon dioxide and supported at its edge by the cup-shaped member 35. A second cup-shaped member 55 is secured to the first member e.g. by welding together the respective cylindrical portions, and the structure is supported from the envelope by leads 77 of which at least one extends through the envelope to provide an electrical connection to the target. The wafer 95 by which the target is supported is subsequently sealed at 97 to a second envelope portion 17 containing the electron gun. In this embodiment the resilient means 63 comprise at least three bowed leaf-type springs spaced round the periphery of the target and welded at one end to the lower surface of cup-shaped member 55. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the resilient means comprises a wavetype washer. In another modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the envelope is a single unitary structure and the target is supported by a single central lead welded to the centre of member 55 and passing through the envelope to provide the electrical connection.
