Abstract

1321460 Synthetic zeolites MOBIL OIL CORP 18 Dec 1970 [18 Dec 1969] 60258/70 Heading C1A A synthetic alumino-silicate zeolite is prepared by thermally crystallizing a reaction mixture containing silica, water, at least two cations or precursors thereof and an alumina-containing clay (e.g. kaolin, halloysite or montmorillonite), the amount of alumina in said mixture other than that contained by the clay being insufficient to permit crystallization of a zeolite. Preferably all the alumina is provided by the clay which may be calcined before use. Non- reactive solids (e.g. α-alumina, titania, zirconia, zircon, barium sulphate or nickel) may be added to the reaction mixture which may be spray dried before heating to effect the crystallization in which the spray dried particles may be in contact with added water or steam. The product may have the formula or where M is a mixture of tetramethyl ammonium cation and alkali metal. The product may be ion exchanged, e.g. into a form containing rare earth ions and/or hydrogen ions or with NH 4 Cl.
