Abstract

1321177 Purifying I.C. engine exhaust gases GENERAL MOTORS CORP 21 Oct 1971 [ 30 Oct 1970] 48967/71 Heading F1B [ Also in Division F2] Air is introduced into the exhaust gases, through air inlet passages 17 provided in exhaust manifolds 13 and 14, each connected to half, the engine combustion chambers, and respective exhaust pipes 61 and 62 are inter-connected downstream of the manifolds. The air flow through the passages 17 is controlled by a valve assembly 23 including check valves 32 which open and close in response to pressure waves generated in the exhaust system during at least the lower half of the engine speed range. The distance between the exhaust pipe inter-connection 63 and the combustion chamber most remote from the inter-connection which is connected to the respective manifold 13 or 14 is greater than six and less than fourteen feet and may be calculated from a formula given in the Specification which involves the flow area of the exhaust pipe, the engine speed for maximum induced air flow and the volume of the exhaust manifold. The pipes 61 and 62 may be connected to a common silencer (64), Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown), with the pipes being of the same or different lengths, or connected to respective silencers and the inter-connection provided by a connecting pipe (66) Fig. 10 (not shown), upstream of the silencers. The valve assembly (23) includes, in addition to the reed check valves 32, a valve 31 operated by a diaphragm 35, subjected to the intake manifold suction, which prevents air flow through the assembly on engine deceleration engaging a seat 48. Communication between the chambers 38 and 43 on opposite sides of the diaphragm is controlled by restriction (55), Fig.5a (not shown), defined between the base of the valve stem 42 and a flexible metal slate 41 to provide a controller time delay in opening of the valve 31. Mixture flowing to the engine through a passage 74 is heated by exhaust gas flowing through a chamber 72 communicating through a passage 71 and pipe 73 with the exhaust system of the combustion chambers associated with the manifold 13.
