Abstract
1320999 Boring earth &c AUTOMATIC DRILLING MACHINES Inc 17 Sept 1971 43452/71 Heading E1F [Also in Division G1] In a drilling rig 10 (Fig. 1) with hydraulic means for raising and lowering the drill string 16, the hydraulic pressure is measured by transducers 34, 36 as a measure of the weight of the drill string, and the summed electrical signal is compared with preset limiting values at 50 to energise an alarm relay 54 when the weight is outside the limits. The drill string 16 is supported by a head 14 moved vertically by pistons 26, 28 in cylinders 20, 22 supplied with fluid under pressure via pipes 30, 32, the pressure being measured by the transducers 34, 36. The relay 54 is also operable by a large rate of change of weight signal, determined by rate amplifier 56. The drill string weight may alternatively be measured by strain gauges mounted on pistons 26, 28, or load cells located under the rig 10. The drill is rotated by fluid motors 73 fed via hose 78 and the hydraulic pressure, measured by transducer 80 as a measure of the drilling torque, is compared at 90 with preset limiting values to energise alarm relay 94 when the torque is outside these limits. A further alarm relay 112 is energised when the said pump pressure, measured by transducer 102, falls to a value preset by pointer 110. The alarm relays 54, 94, 112 selectively control alarm lamps and means for terminating drilling.
