Abstract
1323788 Boring earth &c SOC NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE 10 Dec 1971 [10 Dec 1970] 57486/71 Heading E1F [Also in Division F1] Signals generated at the bottom of a drilling well and representing measurements taken thereat are transmitted to the well head by periodically closing a needle valve 13 Fig. 1 in the path of the downcoming drilling fluid; the valve 13 being mechanically connected by its stem 57 to the upper end of a doubleacting hydraulic jack piston 56 supplied with working fluid by a pump 7 fast with the shaft 14 of a drilling liquid-operated turbine 16 and controlled by an electrically operated reversible servo-valve 50 responsive to the intensity of electric signals rotated to the measurement signals whereby the fluid flow to the jack is proportional to the signal intensity. The turbine 16 also drives an electric alternator 5 for supplying current to a unit 31 and thence to an encoder 59, an amplifier 60 and a sensor 33 responsive to the position of valve 13. In operation the sensor 33 supplies along a conductor 28 an electrical signal representing the position of valve 13 to the amplifier 40 to which is also supplied through a conductor 59' a reference signal from coder 59 rotated to the observed well measurements. The difference between signals at 28, 59' are transmitted by amplifier 60 along a conductor 58 to servo-valve 50 which results in movement of piston 56 in a direction tending to reduce said difference between signals at 28, 59'. In a modification the signal representing the position of valve 13 is responsive to the fluid pressure drop across the valve.
