1320912 Forming structural elements HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 19 Aug 1970 [25 Sept 1969] 47337/69 Headings B5A and B5N [Also in Division B3] In a method of making a structural angle section member in fibre- or filament-reinforced synthetic resin material, a deformable element, of a cross-sectional configuration which can be given the desired final cross-section simply by bending or folding it without cutting, acts as a former in a winding operation using curable resin-impregnated fibre or filament and, after winding, the former and its lay-up of fibre or filament are subjected to a pressing or other forming operation to produce the desired final cross-section of the work before or during curing of the resin, the deformable element constituting a permanent core in a member so made. As shown, Fig. 4, to form an L-section member, a length of aluminium or other metal sheet, bent substantially to box section but with a gap at one corner is mounted on a mandrel 12 and has resin-impregnated carbon fibres wound around it at 13 by conventional techniques, optionally after it has been wrapped in a resin-impregnated carbon-fibre undirectional warp sheet 14. The section 11 is slid off the mandrel and passed through forming rolls, some of which are located in a curing oven, or through a press, to deform the box section to L-section by bending the walls 21 and 22 back on the other two walls. Figs. 8-12 show various starting sections and Figs. 8A-12A the corresponding finished sections.
