Abstract

1320903 Measuring speed electrically E M DEELEY 29 Sept 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 39793/69 Heading G1N The speed of a moving metal strip or a vehicle on a metal track is measured by apparatus comprising a writing head 3 for recording imprints on the strip, a reading head 1 detecting the imprints and an amplifier 10 which amplifies the detected signals and feeds them to the writing head 10, the frequency of the signal being indicative of the speed. The recording may be magnetic electrostatic or thermal, and may comprise entrained eddy-currents. The reading head is constructed to be preferentially responsive to a particular wavelength of imprints and the device operates to maintain this wavelength, the frequency varying accordingly as the speed varies. Constructions of reading heads are disclosed, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
