In the measurement of the eccentricity of a member rotating about a fixed axis, the diameters of the member in two positions are sensed using similar inductive transducers A, B, Fig. 1, each comprising an anvil 3 in contact with the surface of the member and magnetic core of a differential transformer in contact with a diametrically opposite point. The supports for each anvil and differential transformer are mounted together on a floating caliper 2 or 4 so that the anvil is free to move with effective changes in radius of the member (due either to an overall increase in radius or eccentricity of the member), movement of the anvil causing corresponding movement of the differential transformer relative to its core, so that the total relative movement of core and anvil corresponds to the diametral change. The two calipers also have mounted on them supports, one for a differential transformer and the other on which its core rests so that relative movement between the two calipers is indicated by change in inductance of the transformer; these changes can be shown to be equal to the difference of half the diameters sensed by the two transducers A and B Œhalf the difference of the eccentricities sensed. Each transducer is connected to a D.C. excited solid state oscillator, a phase-sensitive demodulater whose output represents the relative displacement of coil and core and which is fed to a buffer amplifier provided with output terminals 6, 8, 10, the voltage across these terminals being indicative of #¢ input displacement respectively. To provide a measure of the relative eccentricity of the member the output from the buffer amplifier connected to transducer C has subtracted from it the outputs from the buffer amplifiers connected to transducers A and B. To provide an indication of maximum material conditions, the output from the amplifier connected to transducer B is added to the output of the buffer amplifier connected to transducer C to provide a signal indicative of the sum of the two diameters measured and their relative eccentricities.
