Abstract

626,206. Determining physical qualities of materials ; resistance measurements ; combinations of resistances. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, OROWAN, E., HOFF, E. A. W., and LOS, J. Dec. 2, 1944, No. 24111. [Class 37] [Also in Group XIX] A stress indicator for measuring loads, particularly the load between the rolls of a rolling mill, comprises a block on which electrical resistance strain gauges are mounted in such a way that one or more of the gauges are tensioned and one or more are compressed, the load being determined by adding together the resistance variation effect of the gauges. As shown, the block is cylindrical and is adapted to support along the axis the total load of one of the bearings of one roll. Four strain gauges a, Fig. 1, sensitive to variations in the length of the block, and four strain gauges b sensitive to variations in the circumference of the block, are mounted equidistant on the block. The gauges are stuck on the bottom of shallow recesses in the block and are covered and sealed by means of an external sleeve 3 (not shown) and a sealing compound to protect them from the atmosphere. To measure the load on the bearings on the roll, the combined strain gauges a of the block are arranged at A in the Wheatstone bridge, Fig. 3, and the combined strain gauges b of the same block are arranged at B. The other arms have fixed resistances x and y. The two effects of A and B are cumulative in the galvanometer c. Zero adjustment is by a variable resistance g. Total load on the roll is measured by two blocks, one at each end, the combined gauges of the second block replacing resistances x, y in the circuit. Like gauges of the two blocks are opposite so that the effects on the galvanometer are cumulative. In both these arrangements temperature variations are cancelled out. For photographic recording or for ordinary purposes a modified moving coil galvanometer with torsion wire suspension is used, the coils having a natural period between 1 and 0.01 second, and having a mirror directly attached thereto. For pen or pencil recording, amplification means may be included in the circuit.
