Abstract

1320886 Folding paper F M BIGGAR JNR 11 April 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 16701/72 Heading B8R [Also in Division B6] An output shaft 10, Fig. 1, of a printing press drives in fixed speed relation an intermediate shaft 20 through gear or other means 14, 16, 22, 18. The shaft 20 drives, in fixed speed relation with the shaft 10, the shaft 30 carrying the feed roll 32 of a fanfolding machine, through gear or other means 24, 26, 28. The shaft 20 also drives, in fixed speed relation with the shaft 10, an input section 50, Fig. 3, of a shaft 42 carrying a wheel 44 on which is mounted the eccentric 46 for driving the oscillating folding member of the fanfolding machine. The section 50 and an output section 54, Fig. 3A, are connected by a coupling 48. The coupling 48 comprises a wormwheel 58 fixed to the section 50, and an assembly fixed to the section 54 and comprising an electric motor 62, a counterweight 60, and a body portion 70 supporting a shaft 68, to which is fixed a worm 72 engaging the worm-wheel 58 and a worm-wheel 66 engaging a worm 64 on the motor output shaft. The motor is reversible and energized through a brush block 76, and a slip ring assembly 74 caused by the section 54, under the control of finger depressible switches. With the motor idle, the sections 50, 54, and thus the shaft 10 and the folding member, are coupled together in fixed relationship. By energizing the motor, the folding member can be caused to operate faster or more slowly than the shaft 10, and this adjustment can be made while both the press and the folding machine are operating. The folding machine is thus adjustable according to the printing press speed and the fold length required.
