Abstract
1320399 Polyester filaments KURARAY CO Ltd 17 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969 20 Sept 1969 (2) 25 Sept 1969 (2)] 44495/70 Heading B5B Melt-spun filaments of polyethylene terephthalate which also contain a minor proportion, e.g. 0À5-10 mol per cent, of metal sulphonate, sulphinate, phosphonate, phosphinate or carboxylate groups are drawn and thereafter heated at constant length between 160‹ C. and a temperature 15‹C. below the polymer m.p., e.g. for 0À1 sec.-15 min., and optionally redrawn e.g. by 1-5% between 100‹ C. and a temperature 15‹ C. below the polymer m.p. In modifications the polymer may contain minor molar proportions of (i) another dicarboxylic aromatic acid of up to 25 C atoms or a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid of up to 20 C atoms, (ii) an aliphatic dial of up to 20 C atoms and which is branched or contains a cycloalkene group or (iii) diethylene glycol. In such cases the heating temperature may be as low as 140‹ C. In examples; the first draw is 3À2-4x at 80-130‹ C. in hot water or over a heated pin on plate; 5-sodium sulphoisophthalic or 2-potassium sulphosterephthalic acid dimethyl esters are incorporated in the polymer; as the diol (iii) above neopentyl glycol or cyclohexane dimethanol are used; as the acid (i) above isophthalic or adipic acids are used in the form of their dimethyl esters; and the final filaments may be heat-set without tension. The filaments have affinity for basic dyes and possess strong light fastness when so dyed.
