Abstract

1320398 Protector for head and upper chest P W BOTHWELL 16 Sept 1970 44163/70 Heading A3V A protector for the head and upper chest, intended for a motor cyclist, comprising a helmet part 10 rotatably mounted inside an outer structure 14, so that the weight of the protector is supported by the wearer's shoulders and not by the neck. The outer structure may be made from material such as a layer of polyurethane foam sandwiched between two layers of resin bonded glass fibre, and the helmet may be made from polystyrene foam with a layer 13 of polytetrafluoroethylene on its outer surface. A glass visor 18 is provided, which may have an extension at each side. In addition the protector may be fitted with: a metal roll-bar 20, as in Figure 4. (not shown), the leg parts of which may have telescopic shock absorbers; an inertia reel as in Figures 5, 6 (not shown) to prevent sudden rotation of the helmet; a venilator system; an external wiper system; an internal demister system; a periscopic mirror system; and additional strengthening bars 22 as in Figures 7, 8 (not shown). Also the head and chest parts of the outer structure may be formed in one piece, or as two pieces releasably lockable together.
