Abstract
1319958 Pistons WELL-WORTHY Ltd 22 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 47080/69 Heading F2T [Also in Division B3] The skirt 1 of a light alloy piston is formed in its outer surface 3 with a helical groove 2 which has a depth not exceeding substantially 0À0013 inch. The profile of the groove may be symmetrical, Fig. 1, or asymmetrical, Fig. 3, and a sharp corner may be formed at the juncture of its upper part 2a with the surface 3. The groove which is stated to act as an oil reservoir in use, may have a depth and width of approximately 0À001 inch and 0À015 inch respectively and may be continuous or interrupted e.g. at the thrust faces. It may be cut simultaneously with machining the outer contour of the skirt which may taper longitudinally and/or be of oval crosssection.
