Abstract
1319310 Welding by fusion LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - GmbH 23 Nov 1970 [25 Nov 1969] 55593/70 Heading B3R [Also in Division H5] A gas-shielded arc welding device for welding a thin walled axially symmetrical workpiece comprises a non-consumable knife-edged annular electrode 7, an electromagnet 19 for rotating an arc struck between the electrode 7 and the workpiece, and two heat proof electrically insulating annular discs 13, 14 on opposite sides of the electrode 7 which serve to confine the arc and provide spaces on opposite sides of the electrode 7 through which protective gas flows. The device is particularly suitable for welding the end stopper to a nuclear fuel encasing tube. The stopper is gripped in an earthed copper gripping device 3 and the encasing tube is slid over the stopper by means not shown until arrested by a stop, whereupon arcing is initiated by high frequency or an auxiliary arc. Protective gas, e.g. argon is supplied to the tungsten or tantalum electrode 7 from pipe 15, annular chamber 16 and radial passages 17, 18. The electrode 7 is replaceably clamped between copper discs 8, 9. Protective gas is exhausted through a radial bore 23 in a mounting head 21 which is secured by bolts 22 to a wall 20. Gripping device 3 is held in wall 20 by a bush. The nuclear fuel encasing tube has molten sodium introduced between the fuel and its wall for heat conduction and the welding is performed in a working chamber because of radiation and poison hazards of the fuel.
