Abstract

1319238 Clamps A LONG & CO Ltd 9 Dec 1970 [22 Sept 1969 18 May 1970] 46564/ 69 and 23871/70 Heading E2B [Also in Division B3] An internal line up clamp for aligning pipe sections 12, 14 prior to welding includes levers 36 formed with clamping members 38, 39 which engage respectively the pipes 12, 14 to be joined and one moved under the influence of a single expansion mechanism. As shown a hydraulic cylinder 18 has an annular piston (not shown) attached to disc 20 pivotally connected link 44. The opposite end of link 44, which is bifurcated, is connected by a pivot pin 34 to an expansion arm 30 and the lever 36. In operation the clamp is pulled by means of rod 46 to the end of pipe 12 which is already welded to the previous pipe length and the next pipe length 14 placed around the rod 46 as shown. Fluid pressure is supplied through lines 50, 49 to the cylinder 18 which moves disc 20 against the action of spring 48. Expansion arm 30 then begins to rotate about pivot 35 and clamping member 38 then contacts the pipe 12. Further movement of disc 20 causes clamping member 39 to pivot about the point of contact of member 38 with the pipe 12 against the action of spring 42 until member 39 contacts pipe 14. Further pressure may be applied to firmly locate the clamp. For the sake of clarity the drawing only shows one expansion arm 30 and its associated parts whereas the device has several such arms 30 circumferentially located about the pipe's axis. Each lever 36 may have one or more contact points with the pipe walls and rollers may be fitted at these points to facilitate engaging movement of the clamp.
