Abstract

1318997 Exhaled gas treater CHEMETRON CORP 1 July 1970 [28 July 1969] 31984/70 Heading A5T [Also in Division B1] A carbon dioxide absorber for treating an exhaled mixture of air and theraputic gases for recirculation comprises a canister to contain a carbon dioxide absorbent material with inlet and outlet fittings at its ends walls and inlet and outlet check valves connected to the respective fittings to prevent any flow of gases out of the inlet fitting or back into the outlet fitting. The canister 12 has perforated retaining walls 42 and 44 separating the absorbent material from the respective inlet and outlet end walls 14 and 16. Sections 48 and 64 of the retaining walls which are aligned with the inlet and outlet are imperforate as are the margins 50 and 66 of the walls. An exhaled mixture of gases passes through the inlet check valve fitting 80 attached to the inlet fitting 18 which comprises a cross member 86 aligned with a disc 90, the disc being connected to a stem 94 which passes through an aperture in the cross member. A similar outlet check valve fitting 110 is attached to the outlet fitting 24. An infeed pipe 140 is attached to the outlet fitting to pass fresh gas into the stream of treated exhaled gas. A pressure gauge may be fitted at the end 70 of the inlet fitting, whilst a breathing bag may be fitted at the beaded end 72a of the outlet fitting to catch moisture from the canister. In a second embodiment Figs. 5 and 6, not shown, the valve fittings are formed integrally with the respective inlet and outlet fittings. A colour indicator may be added to the absorbent material in the canister to indicate approxiately how much carbon dioxide has been absorbed, and a transparent panel is fitted into the canister in order to observe the colour change.
