Abstract

1318672 Testing workpieces INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 25 Oct 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 49420/71 Heading G4H A workpiece, e.g. a spherical type element 4 (Fig. 1) is inspected by positioning it until a desired portion is displayed on a television 7, its position being digitized and compared with reference signals. As described any character on the type element may be viewed by vidicon 11 to display it in magnified form by appropriately tilting and rotating the element by member 21. A mask unit 13 has a set of cross hairs which determine a reference point on the display, table 20 being moved in two directions to position different points of a selected character under the intersection of the cross hairs. The rotation tilt and X and Y displacement may be displayed. When an operator has positioned the table 20 for a measurement a push button on panel 35 is pressed and the measured data is read via gates into controller 3 for comparison with a table lookup. After all characters on an element have been checked the output is printed or punched on cards. The table lookup may be derived by measuring a reference element. The apparatus may be programmed so that after each measurement member 2 moves the element so that the characters are selected in a predetermined manner. Alternatively the apparatus may be operated manually in which case the member moves the element one character position each time an appropriate button is pressed. The digitizers may comprise discs with coded apertures and an outer clock track.
