Abstract
1318365 Position finding RHEINMETALL GmbH 7 Sept 1970 42783/70 Heading G4H [Also in Division H4] An apparatus for detecting the point at which a projectile passes through a two dimensional grid comprising two banks of light sources 12, 14 (Fig. 1a) and two banks of light receivers 20, 22, each light receiver is associated with a store 24, 26 which is set when the light to the associated receiver is cut off by a projectile, the stores then being sequentially scanned to determine the set store in each dimension. As described a shot detector 28 detecting a projectile enables, after a time delay, a pulse generator 32 which simultaneously transmits pulses to a counter 54 (Fig. 1b) in an indicator and steps a counter 34 associated with one direction to interrogate the stores 24. When a set store is detected the generator is stopped to stop the count. The process is then repeated for the other direction, the resulting counts being displayed on number tubes. The indicator may simultaneously display the results of several shots. The co-ordinates may be printed. The speed of the projectile may be found by measuring the duration for which the light source is interrupted. The frame supporting the light transmitter may be provided with a heat reflective coating to minimize errors due to temperature variations. Each light receiver is connected via a high pass filter to its associated store so that stores are not set when slow moving objects, e.g. birds, interrupt the light. Corrections for large calibre shot may be made.
