Abstract

1318259 Administering medicaments to ruminants COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION 28 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 41551/70 Headings A5B and A5R Apparatus for administering a therapeutic or a nutrient substance to a ruminant comprises a device, of or containing said substance, which is adapted to be arranged in a first configuration to be passed through the mouth of the animal, and then to assume a second configuration to prevent or hinder regurgitation of the device. In the embodiment shown, two generally semi-cylindrical members 1, closed at their ends, are hinged at 9A, 8B, and a band 14 of elastic material is attached at the outsides of the members, as shown, and passes through a member 13 attached to both members 1 along their common edge and bent into the shape of a "U". In use a substance in liquid form is placed into each member I via the slots 4 and the members are united to form a generally, closed cylindrical shape and thus retained, against the tension in the band 14, by a band of material, e.g. gelatin, soluble in the environment inside an animal, which upon dissolving allows the device to assume the configuration shown to hinder regurgitation and liberate the substance to the animal tissue. The hinges 9A, 8B and the band 14 are made from or secured to components of a material which is either soluble or frangible in the stomach of the animal so that the device may break into separate components for regurgitation after all the medicant substance has been exhausted. Other embodiments described all preferably being bound by a soluble gelatin band prior to insertion, comprise two closed semi-cylinders (21), Fig. 4 (not shown), bound together by strips (22) of material comprising a layer of hyrophobic substance and a layer of hydrophilic substance, which strip is adapted to hold the members (21) at a distance in the animal. A further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown) comprises two similar semi-cylinders (31) attached by a resilient nylon hinge (32). Projections (42), (43), Fig. 8 (not shown) may be employed, or a resilient device of toroidal shape, Fig. 10 (not shown) may be restrained by soluble gelatin bands (52) prior to insertion. A large number of materials and medicaments are mentioned, a preferred medicament substance being a bloat control agent, e.g. a polyoxyalkylene, which is preferably contained in a matrix of a gel having ethyl cellulose as gelling agent. Alternatively the substance may be a source of magnesium.
