Abstract

1318119 Aquatic herbicidal compositions MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 23 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 35826/70 Heading A5E An aquatic herbicidal synergistic composition comprises at least one herbicidal ionic substance bonded by reversible ion exchange to the surface of a water-insoluble, particulate, inert carrier, and a synergistically effective quantity of a copper-containing compound having a solubility in pure water of up to 50 mg per litre on the basis of dissolved copper ion, the herbicidal ionic substance being capable of being desorbed by ion exchange in water, and the copper containing compound being capable of resting on a plant so that copper ion is absorbed by the plant. In controlling the undesired aquatic plants, the components of the composition may be applied separately or as a composition. Suitable carriers are aluminium, magnesium, zinc, ferric and copper hydroxides, basic salts of calcium and barium, cross-linked polymeric quaternized polyvinyl pyridines and polyvinyl aminostyrenes, and aluminium hydroxide coated hydrobiotite, vermiculite, sand, talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide, clay, bentonite, mica, light silica, glass microspheres and perlite. The ionic herbicide may be endothal, 2,4-D, paraquat, silvex, TCA, dalapon, picloram, arsenites, diquat, and cupric compounds. The copper compound may be a carbonate, oxide, benzoate, bicarbonate, hydroxide or azide. The composition may also contain neutral herbicides such as 2,6-dichlorophenyl cyanide and esters of 2,4-D.
