1317726 Silicon nitride refractories UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 32201/69 Headings C1A and ClJ [Also in Division H5] An Si 3 N 4 conductor is made by mixing Si powder, particulate electrically conductive C, and one or more binders which enable the mix to remain plastic while forming an artefact but can be set to form an unnitrided set artefact, forming a plastic artefact, setting the binder and heating under N 2 to form the product, the heating being carried out so as to avoid reaction between the Si or N 2 and the carbon. Preferably the heat treatment is performed initially at a temperature below that at which Si and C will react, for a sufficient time to form Si 3 N 4 , followed by treatment at high temperature to complete the reaction. The preferred carbon is graphite. A fugitive material may be added to the mix, to be later removed to give a porous product. The porosity or conductivity of the product may be varied throughout its body by varying the amount of fugitive or conductive material throughout the body. The binder may be added in solution, which may be in methyl ethyl ketone, and a plasticizer may be added. A single binder having both thermoplastic and thermosetting properties, e.g. polyvinylbutyral may be used, or a thermoplastic binder, e.g. PVA may be used in conjunction with a thermosetting binder, e.g. an acrylic resin.
