Abstract
1363630 Permeable refractory article UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 55143/70 Headings C1A and C1J [Also in Division B5] Permeable sintered articles which are electrically conductive are formed by granulating a first refractory material which is electrically insulating and which has previously been densified by firing, coating the granules with a slurry comprising a powdered second refractory, a third material, a resin binder and solvent therefor, removing the solvent, shaping the coated granules into a green artefact and firing, the second and third materials being reactive with each other to produce in situ an electrically conductive phase. The resin binder may be thermoplastic or thermosetting or may provide both thermoplastic and thermosetting properties, e.g. polyvinyl butyral. The refractory may be a ceramic, cermet, metal or a mixture thereof. The first refractory may be silicon nitride, the second silicon and the third material may be graphite. Firing may be carried out in two stages, the first stage converting silicon and graphite into silicon carbide and the second at a higher temperature to produce silicon nitride.
