Abstract

1315932 Pulp moulding RESIL PROCESSES Ltd 11 May 1970 [12 Feb 1969] 7532/69 Heading B5A Articles are made from a slurry of inorganic fibres by filling a mould with the slurry, allowing up to 5% by volume of the liquid to drain away and then forcibly, without the use of vacuum, removing the remainder of the liquid to leave a compacted fibrous article. The article may be further compressed and the slurry may contain a binder, refractory particles, or organic fibres such as paper. In one embodiment, a fixed die is located between the platens of an hydraulic press, the bottom platen of which carries an imperforate mould bottom plate upon which is supported by ribs a perforate bottom plate. The die is provided with holes in the region between the two bottom plates and is surrounded by a metal tray having upwardly extending side walls. In operation, with the lower platen and the die bottom plates in their lowermost position water is admitted to the die up to one inch above the perforate bottom plate and the slurry then added to fill the die, the addition of the slurry causing the level of the liquid in the tray to rise to the top of the tray. The upper platen is then lowered to press an impermeable die-plate down on to the slurry thus expelling liquid through the holes in the die into the tray thus carrying the tray to overflow. After the desired density has been reached the top plate is withdrawn, the lower platen raised to move the article free of the die and an air ram actuated to remove the article.
