Abstract

1,179,405. Moulding concrete panels. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 16 May, 1967 [16 Feb., 1966], No. 6874/66. Heading B5A. A concrete panel having a major surface area of greater than 20 sq. ft., e.g. a storey height party-wall unit, is formed in a metal mould 1, mounted on rollers for procession through a plurality of work stations, the base whereof is provided with water drain holes 5 and six larger holes 7<SP>1</SP> for the passage of ejection plungers and on to which is placed a plate 3, provided with smaller drain holes 6, a perforated metal sheet 4 and a sheet of porous filter paper. The mould is filled with concrete from a filling device (14) (Fig. 3, not shown), movable on rails and supplied by a bladed rotor agitated hopper. After levelling the upper surface of the concrete, by vibration or manually a further, preferably wetted, filter paper sheet and a metal sheet 9 are placed on the concrete. The mould is moved to a pressing station for compaction at 200-500 lb. per sq. inch, by a lower platen (16), which is grooved to facilitate water removal, which is raised by six hydraulic rams whereby an upper fixed platen, which may be provided with drain holes, enters the mould and a compression is exerted e.g. for 10 seconds. The mould is traversed to an ejector station where six ejector rams (20) pass through the base thereof to raise the bottom plate 3 whereby the concrete block is removed by an overhead railed vacuum lifter (21) to a stack (22) at a curing station. The press rams are supplied from a common multi-cylinder pump, which also supplies the ejector ram cylinders. The concrete block may be impressed with letters or patterns, by a perforated die on the top surface thereof replacing the sheet 9. Mosaics, or large pieces of aggregate may be placed in the mould bottom, to form a decorative block facing. Pipes or electrical conduits and steel reinforcement may be moulded into the panel which may be provided with joint forming rebates.
