Abstract
1315752 Brushless DC motors SPERRY RAND CORP 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 25352/71 Heading H2A [Also in Division H3] A commutating circuit for a brushless D.C. motor comprises a pulse source 11 for producing pulses at a given repetition rate, a switching arrangement 9 responsive to the pulses for sequentially energizing the motor stator windings, a gate 15 responsive to the counter e.m.f.'s in the stator windings for producing an output when the counter e.m.f. of a winding exceeds a predetermined value, and a synchronizing unit 17 responsive to the gate output for accelerating the pulse repetition rate of the pulse source 11. In the permanent magnet rotor motor shown, the three stator windings are commutated by thyristors 19, 21 and 23 which are triggered through diodes 45, 35 and 41 by pulses from the pulse source. The source includes a capacitor 61 normally charged through resistors 63 and 65 and discharged through a programmable unijunction transistor 53. When the winding counter e.m.f.'s exceed the supply voltage the diodes 73, 75 and 77 of OR gate 15 are individually forward biased to render conductive a transistor 67 which by-passes high value resistance 65 and so reduces the charging time of the capacitor 61. Under normal running conditions transistor 67 is periodically turned on by the counter e.m.f.'s and pulse source 11 feeds pulses to the thyristors 19, 21 and 23 so that the latter are sequentially fired in accordance with rotor position. At start up, diodes 81, 83 and 85 of AND gate 13 are reverse biased by the voltages on the stator windings and normally forward biased diode 87 is reverse biased by a pulse from source 11 so that a pulse is produced on tine 97 to trigger thyristor 19.
