Abstract

1315451 Making caps; stamping; bending by rolls METAL BOX CO Ltd 14 April 1972 13234/71 Headings B3A B3E and B3Q [Also in Division B8] A container lid 1 is formed by pressing a circular blank between dies (not shown) to form a plug portion of U-shaped channel section 3, 4 and 5, and then applying pressure to the inner limb 3 of the channel section by means of one or more rollers 9 controlled by a spirallygrooved cam 10 whilst a flange 8 is curled by a roller 12 to cause said limb to converge upwardly towards the outer limb 4. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the blank is pressed between dies T1, T2 which are shaped to form a bead 13 at the upper end of the inner limb 3. The bead is then flattened between dies 14 and 15 to cause the inner limb to assume the upwardly convergent configuration. The convergent configuration of the limb 3 prevents jamming between nested lids, Fig. 3 (not shown).
