Abstract

1315271 Independent rear suspensions; mounting differential gearing CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 2 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 7123/71 Headings B7D and B7H A rear wheel suspension for a motor vehicle comprises a Y-shaped support member 12 for connection to the underside of the vehicle, a differential unit 17 mounted at the centre of the member 12, semi-trailing suspension arms 24 pivotally mounted on the arms 13 of the member 12, and road wheels 22 rotatably mounted on the suspension arms 24 and connected by drive shafts 19 to the differential unit 17. The suspension arms 24 are connected to the member 12 by resilient pivots 12 positioned beneath and spaced along the arms 13. Resilient mountings 15 for connecting the arms 13 to longitudinal members 10 of the vehicle frame are constructed primarily to provide lateral location, and a resilient mounting 16 for connecting the leg 14 of the. support member 12 to a cross member 11 is constructed primarily to provide fore and aft location. The differential unit 17 is connected to the support member 12 by bolts 18 or may be resiliently mounted thereon. The wheels 22 are journalled in hubs 23 which are connected to the suspension arms 24 by means which provides for adjustment of the toe-in of the wheels as described in Specification 1,315,272.
