Abstract

1315231 Measuring fluid flow rate UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 11 April 1971 [28 April 1971] 12013/71 Heading GIN [Also in Division G6] Apparatus for detecting restrictions to gas flow through a nuclear reactor fuel element channel comprises an elongate housing (1) having therein a blower (4) and a vaned anemometer (5) upstream of the blower, and means for lowering and raising the housing. The lower end of the apparatus embodies an exchangeable nose-piece (9) which allows the apparatus to be a close fit in any fuel element channel. A cap (6) at the upper end of the apparatus receives a conduit (7) carrying power supplies to the blower and anemometer and a stranded strain cable (39) for raising and lowering the apparatus. The anemometer includes a coil (32) connected in a tuned circuit having a display unit at the reactor charge face. Changes in inductance (caused by movement of the rotor vanes (33) through the magnetic field of the coil) are detectable as changes in amplitude of oscillations of the tuned circuit.
