Abstract

1314989 Foundry moulding machines and patterns EARL A THOMPSON MFG CO 12 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 38936/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division G1] In a moulding machine, which uses a pattern comprising two parts 10, 12 with coacting partign surfaces 14, the separating of the two parting surfaces is detected by supplying pressure fluid to a bore 18 passing through part 12 and ending at the parting surfaces 14, and measuring the pressure in the bore. The pressure fluid is supplied to the bore 18 by an extensible tube 22, the end 32 of which is extended to meet a nozzle 20 on the pattern. A double-acting cylinder 36 retracts and extends the tube 22 to engage one of several patterns mounted on a rotating table 16. In order to accommodate upward movements of the pattern the tube 22 is pivoted at 28. Pressure fluid is supplied by a reservoir 48 through a constant pressure valve 46 and cut-off valve 45 to the tube 22 and bore 18. If the pressure remains constant then a diaphragm 52 remains stationary and maintains an electrical switch 58 open. Should the pressure drop (if the pattern parts are not closed tightly) the diaphragm 52 moves closing the switch 58 to complete an electrical circuit 60 which operates a warning device 62 and/or a by-pass mechanism 64. The by-pass mechanism 64 enables the faultily closed pattern to pass through moulding or preparation stations set around the rotating table 16 without operating these stations.
