Abstract

1314962 Gripping tool GOODYEAR TYRE & RUBBER CO (GT BRITAIN) Ltd 8 Jan 1971 968/71 Heading B4W [Also in Divisions B7 and E2] A method of mounting a pneumatic tyre comprises progressively displacing the tyre bead to a position behind a wheel rim whilst a portion of the bead 18 is retained behind the rim 17 at one position therearound by a tool 10 embracing the rim and maintained in position thereagainst by pressure from the adjacent portion of the tyre 24. The tool is a generally V-shape plate, one leg of which comprises a lever 16 contoured at one end along the inside edge 22 so as to mate with the contour of the axially inner side of the rim, and secured at the other end thereof to the second leg 30 of the V-shaped plate. An arm 12 rigidly extends from the end of the second leg generally towards the free end of said lever. A heel 13 is situated at the inside edge of the front end of said arm and is forced into engagement with the axially outermost edge of the rim 14 by the side wall of the tyre to thereby resist the tendency of said portion of the bead to move out of contact with the axially inner surface of the rim.
