Abstract

1314845 Laminating thermoplastic webs MASCHINENFABRIK DORNBUSCH & CO KG 26 Oct 1970 [25 Oct 1969] 50855/70 Heading B5N Thermoplastic films are bonded together by passing the films through a heating section, subjecting the faces to be welded to a vacuum, pressing the films together as they leave the vacuum and cooling the films under atmospheric pressure. In an embodiment, films 6, 7 are passed through heating stations 10, 11 which comprise infra-red heaters 18, 19 above supporting belts 16, 17, into a vacuum chamber 20 defined by rolls 1, 2, 3, 4 and end plates 5, pressed together in the nip 23 as the films leave the vacuum chamber and then passed over the cooling roller 24 and taken up on roll 26. The rollers 1, 2, 3, 4 may have the same or different diameters and preferably have substantially the same thermal expansion. Rollers 1 and 3 may be rigidly supported and rollers 2 and 4 may be adjustably pressed against them. In another embodiment, apparatus for combining n films comprises 2n rollers defining a vacuum chamber 36. The vacuum chamber may be defined by heatable metal rollers 30, 32, 33, 35 and rollers provided with elastic thermally stable lining 31, 34. Preferably one of the rollers located at the outlet gap of the vacuum chamber is firmly mounted whereas the other roller is capable of being pressed roll firmly in the direction of the outlet gap, e.g. by a pressure cylinder and in the direction of the other roller which abuts against it.
