Abstract

1314511 Continuous rod making-machine MOLINS MACHINE Co Ltd 10 April 1970 [10 April 1969 13 June 1969] 18391/69 and 30171/69 Heading A2C The garniture of the machine includes means to blow air through the bed 1 of the garniture, below the garniture tape 2, to form a film of air between the tape 2 and the bed 1. The air is supplied by a manifold 23 to holes 22 in the bed 1, and during use forms a thin film of air that serves as an air bearing between the bed 1 and the tape 2 thus preventing an excessive rise in temperature due to friction. The invention is applied to the manufacture of filter rods, the rod forming and wrapping mechanism being the same as that disclosed in Specification 1314512 and includes the rod diameter control of Specification 1314513. A heat exchanger 17, Fig. 2, which is also disclosed, is mounted immediately downstream of a heat sensitive adhesive activating heater to cool the wrapper seam and set the adhesive thereon. The heat exchanger 17 comprises a body portion 18 having a main passage through which air is fed to a plurality of cooling passages 20 that exit through an external surface 21. The surface 21 is of arcuate shape conforming with the shape of the continuous rod, and the heat exchanger is pivotally mounted so that the surface 21 rests on the continuous rod.
