Abstract

131,437. Miller, C. H. Aug. 19, 1918. Ball bearings.-In a ball bearing having a divided outer lace ring, the sections 17 of the ring are spaced apart, after the balls 15 have been inserted, by a number of spacing-balls 19, Fig. 1, forming a continuous row confined by a split ring 20. As shown in Fig. 4, the spacing-balls 25 may occupy separate cells in a cage ring 27 and may lie in recesses 26 in the race sections 17. The cage 27 may be integral with a housing ring 28, which may have a number of holes closed by screw plugs for the introduction of the balls 25. The outer ball races 44 are spherical, and the inner race ring 14 may be seated spherically on a bush 37, Fig. 1, to render the bearing self-alining. The bush 37 is inserted edgeways through two opposite slots 39 in the ring 14, and then turned into its working position, the slots being afterwards filled by keys 40. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the race sections 40, 41 have spherical contact at 42, and are held together by balls 43 sprung into a groove.
