Abstract

1314331 Flame-proof enclosures NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 30 April 1970 [14 May 1969] 24633/69 Heading A5A A flame-proof enclosure housing potential explosion-initiating equipment, e.g. an electric motor, has a further part of the internal space of the enclosure separated therefrom or defined by a flame arrestor, the free space volume of the further part being greater than that in the part containing the equipment. In Fig. 3 an electric motor has casing 10 housing annular stator 11 disposed round rotor 12 from which shaft 13 projects through 10 via bearing 14 secondary enclosure 15 defining expansion space 16 which is larger than free space 17 inside 10. Enclosure 15 is partly formed by annulus 18 of expanded or foamed metal. Alternatively (as in Fig. 4) enclosure 15 can be replaced by annular block 19 of porous foamed metal sited in end cap 10a.
