Abstract
1314061 Making threaded inserts PRECISION SCREW & MFG CO Ltd 3 Dec 1970 [24 Jan 1970 24 Feb 1970] 3543/70 and 8932/70 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A threaded insert providing a screw-threaded anchorage in a workpiece comprises a body including pilot portion 11 and a section formed with at least one band 12 having helical teeth 13 on its external surface and a ring 15, larger in external diameter than the body and also provided with external helical teeth but in the opposite sense the ring being axially captive but freely rotatable with respect to the body. The bands are spaced by neck 11b and groove 14 into which material cut out by teeth 13 is displaced. Ring 15 and the upper band 12 are joined by a tapering neck (16) and an annular shoulder (26), and the bore 22 of the ring has a slightly larger diameter than the neck. In preparation for use a blow is imparted to the end face of ring 15 causing shear of the shoulder, and consequently shoulder (26) impacts against upper band 12 and is deformed radially inwardly as in Fig. 4 making the ring axially captive on the body but freely rotatable thereon. Thus when bands 12 and ring 15 are driven into a workpiece they rotate in opposite senses and any subsequent applied axial load will tend to lock the body and the ring together which thus resist withdrawal.
