Abstract

1313768 Separating entrained garbage from air streams CENTRALSUG AB 14 April 1970 [18 April 1969] 17784/70 Headings BIT and B2P Domestic garbage entrained in an air stream is removed therefrom by drawing the air inwards through apertures defined between axial blades 11 forming the periphery of a drum 10 rotated fast enough (over 300 r.p.m.) to prevent passage of solid particles. Light material rejected by the drum is then guided or falls to a garbage outlet without being reentrained by incoming air, while heavy material can fall to the outlet in some embodiments without approaching the drum. The drum is enclosed either in a container 1 or in a side chamber thereof, having an inlet 2 and respective upper and lower outlets 3 and 4 for air and garbage, outlet 4 being provided with valves (not shown) whereby garbage is removed without breaking the vacuum prevailing in container 1. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the drum rotates about a horizontal axis in a side chamber (12). In Fig. 2 (not shown) the drum axis is vertical, inlet 2 opens tangentially into chamber (13) wherein the drum is mounted, and a back passage (14) connects inlet 2 direct to container 1 to prevent excess pressure buildup. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) drums 10 rotate about horizontal axes in the top of container 1, the baffle (16) in Fig. 4 defining a downward path for light solids, enabling them to be collected separately from heavy solids which fall directly from inlet 2 to outlet 4. Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) illustrate separators with two drums rotating in opposite directions about parallel axes. The container in Fig. 5 has a tangential inlet 2 below the drums, while Fig. 6 has a downwardly directed inlet between the drums. The drums 10 in Fig. 7 (not shown) rotate about a common axis, their open ends communicating with outlet 3 via chamber (20). The sides of the drums nearest inlet 2 move upwards. Figs. 8 to 11 (not shown) illustrate modified drum constructions designed to ensure uniform inward flow along the length of the drum. In Fig. 8 an inner drum 25 has holes whose diameters vary along the axis. In Fig. 9, drum 10 is divided into zones by concentric flared tubes through which air is withdrawn. In Fig. 10 a cylindrical drum 10 is formed by wedge-like, blades 11 so that the apertures therebetween taper axially. In Fig. 11 the blades are uniform but the drum 10 is frusto-conical.
