Abstract

1313634 Jointing; making piston-rods H & H BISHOP Ltd 21 Jan 1972 2961/72 Headings B3A and B3V A close-fitting sleeve is assembled on a core by turning annular grooves in the outside of the core and the inside of the sleeve, inserting sealing rings in the grooves, fitting the sleeve over the core so that the rings pass each other, and directing lubricant through a radial passage to the interface of the core and sleeve between the rings to facilitate sliding of the sleeve the rest of the way on the core. The method may be applied to reconditioned or composite pistonrods and to pulleys and gears on shafts. The core 1 of a piston-rod is formed with a shoulder (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), which may be provided by turning down a worn piston-rod. Axial and radial passages 5, 4 are provided through which lubricant is supplied under pressure after the core has been pressed into the sleeve far enough for the rings 9, 13 to pass each other. The lubricant acts on the rings to drive the sleeve the rest of the way until the lubricant escapes through a vent hole (17), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the sleeve. A strengthening collar 18 is then cut away and the outside of the sleeve ground to size. The lubricant supply may be to either end of the core or to the sleeve, which may have a reinforcing collar at the supply point, Fig. 7 (not shown). The sleeve may be secured by welding or by a nut on the core.
