Abstract
1313556 Typewriters BROTHER KOGYO KK 22 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50317/70 Heading B6F Letter spacing escapement mechanism in a typewriter includes a repeat-spacing key 55 whereby the platen carriage is repeatedly stepped while the key is depressed. The key is linked to a resilient member 46 such that when the key is depressed the member 46 engages an arm 18a of a feed pawl 18 to urge a nose 18c thereof into engagement with an escapement wheel 16, a keep pawl 19 being disengaged from the wheel 16 by a stop 18f engaging an arm 19c. The escapement wheel 16 is thus permitted to rotate half a toothpitch under the urge of a spring drum 33, until a tooth of the wheel 16 engages the nose 18c. The impact urges the nose out of engagement with the tooth, stressing the resilient member 46 and bringing the keep pawl 19 back into operative position. The resilient member 46 then urges the pawl 18 back into engagement with the wheel 16 for a repeat spacing cycle. In normal operation, a space bar 45 acts through a lever 38 or a tyne key (not shown) through a universal lever 3À7 to rock an actuator lever 24 to rock the pawl 18, impact disengagement being prevented by positive engagement between the lever 24 and arm 18d of the pawl 18. The resilient member 46 comprises a pivotable wire having an inertia increasing weight 49 at its free end, the other end being connected to a rod 50 coupled to the key 55.
