Abstract

1313385 Positive detents; lubricating brakes; twist handles; valves JAMESBURY CORP 27 July 1970 [30 Sept 1969] 36244/70 Headings F2E and F2V An apparatus for positioning a rotatable member such as a valve stem 88, 64, Fig. 4, comprises a support member 12, 14, adapted at 16, 18 to grasp stem 64, a handle 36, 38, including a channel 52, a bushing 56 slidable in the hollow part 38 of the handle, a pawl 44 and a pin 50 extending into channel 52 and connecting bushing 56 with pawl 44, so that rotation of handle 36, 38 about its longitudinal axis moves pawl 44 in a direction away from a ratchet 62 (secured to the valve housing) (the channel 52 being V-shaped as shown). With the pawl held released the apparatus may be moved arc-wise (arrow, Fig. 3) to a new position at which the handle may be rotated to permit the pawl to re-engage the ratchet. As shown, the pawl is biased to engaged position by a spring 54. Preferably the bushing 56 is of nylon or PTFE. The support member may have an extension 66 with a hole 68 so that it may be secured to ratchet 60, e.g. by a padlock passed through hole 68 and a corresponding hole in the ratchet. The pawl tooth need not occupy a ratchet space when the apparatus is thus secured. The handle is retained against the pull of spring 54 by a ring 42 around it engaging the hollow part of the support member, so if necessary the pawl may be freed from the ratchet merely by pulling the handle radially outwards instead of twisting it. The cavity in the support member 12 may be packed with grease retained by a plug 34.
