Abstract

1312847 Coil formers ELTRA CORP 8 July 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 33125/70 Heading B8M [Also in Division H1] A unitary hollow spool 20 of electrically non- conductive material, e.g. plastics material for use in an electric coil unit, comprises a hollow body 33 having a cylindrical bore to receive and support a secondary winding 22, a pair of axially spaced apart circular flanges 34, 35 extending around the outer surface of the body to position the spool coaxially within a coil can 10, and to support a primary winding therebetween, the flanges having a radial depth greater than the depth of the electrical winding to be supported therebetween to space the outer turns of the said winding from the walls of the can, and a spool-supporting foot extending axially below the body to rest on the closed lower end 11 of the coil can. The spool 20 is provided with an annular rim 36 above the top flange 34, which rim accommodates a depending skirt 37 on the coil cap 12. The spool-supporting foot comprises a frusto-conical portion 38 having a closed end 40 to support a core 23 of the coil unit, and a pair of radially opposed feet 41, 42. A cylindrical portion extends between the lower flange 35 and the frusto-conical portion 38 to provide an internal land 39 on which the secondary winding seats. The primary winding 21 of the unit is located between the flanges 34, 35 on the outside of the body 33, a hole 43 being provided to lead the end of the winding 21 to the interior of the spool for connection to a terminal in the coil unit. The total length of the two opposed radial feet 41 or 42 is substantially equal to the effective diameter of the coil can 10, e.g. together with metal shims 44, 45 and cardboard facing 46. In an alternative embodiment the spoolsupporting foot is cylindrical and is provided with two arcuate flanges to locate the spool coaxially in the coil can. The spool is preferably moulded from asbestos-filled nylon.
