Abstract

1312831 Pipe joints; pipe supports E RASMUSSEN AS 18 March 1970 [18 March 1969] 13075/70 Divided out of 1311472 Headings F2G and F2P Adjacent pipe sections 2 having one or more inner pipes 4 surrounded by foam 8 and an outer plastics layer 6 are connected by the butt welding of the inner pipes 4 and the securing of two semi-cylindrical shells 12, 16 over the space between adjacent foam layers. The shells 12, 16 may be secured by means of bolts 17 passing through holes 15 in flanges 14 extending therefrom. The shells 12, 16 when fitted together may be of a smaller diameter than the outside diameter of the pipe sections 2 so that the ends of the latter are compressed when the shells are tightened together. Plugs 22, 24 located in the shells 12, 16, respectively, may be used to fill the space enclosed by the shells with an insulating foam. Further a sealing and adhesive compound may be applied to the areas of contact between the pipes 6 and the shells 12, 16. The shells 12, 16 may be straight as in Fig. 2 or bent as in Fig. 4 or shaped to produce elbows and T-pieces, Figs. 3, 5, 6 (not shown). In the case of T-pieces the axis of the branch tube lies in the plane of contact between the shells. The branch tube may be of the same or smaller diameter and in the latter case may have inwardly directed flanges, Fig. 5 (not shown). When there is a reduction in outside diameter between adjacent pipe sections 2 a split-ring (3) may be placed inside the shells to fill the annular space existing between the circumference of the reduced diameter pipe sections and the internal surface of the tightened shells. As shown in Fig. 4, a rod 13 may be fitted to one of the shells and also to the inner pipe 4 and the protruding part of the rod 13 used to anchor the pipe-line to a suitable surface. The shells 12, 16 may also be used to directly support the pipe sections 2 when the pipe passes through a wall and the insulating layer 8 and the outer pipe 6 terminate on either side of the wall and the shells are fitted about the pipe 4 in the wall itself. Such a method of covering the pipes 4 and joining the pipe sections 2 may be employed in a heat insulating pipe system.
