Abstract
1312815 Securing glass to metal PROTECTIVE TREATMENTS Inc 13 July 1970 33908/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division C3] Adherent tapes for mounting windscreens to automobiles are formed from a non-curing mixture of (1) an elastomeric material, (2) finely-divided solids, and (3) 2-25 wt. per cent of a volatile plasticizer, the mixture being initially permanently deformable at low pressure and exhibiting no cold flow, and becoming firmer upon evaporation of the plasticizer. The physical characteristics of the mixture are specified. The composition may also include a non-volatile plasticizer (up to 20%), an adhesion promoting material, and cured elastomer. Extensive lists of possible ingredients are given. Exemplified compositions contain mixtures of cross-linked butyl rubber, butyl rubber, chlorinated butyl rubber, styrene-butadiene block co-polymer, hydrogenated wood rosin ester, carbon black in oil, bulk asbestos fibre, hydrated silica, processing oil, polyvinyl acetate, phenolformaldehyde resin, phenyl-formaldehyde condensate, zinc oxide, platy talc and toluene (volatile plasticizer). The tapes may have a variety of cross-section according to desired properties. In use a tape is applied to the metal automobile frame around the pinch weld flange, and the glass is positioned and pressed into place against the tape so as to deform the tape into adhering sealing contact with the glass and metal. Alternatively, two tapes may be used (not necessarily of the same type), one being applied to the metal frame and the other to the glass, the two tapes bonding together when the glass is pressed into place. Both metal and glass are preferably primed, e.g. with a butyl rubber primer, to promote adhesion of the tapes thereto.
