Abstract

1312519 Quenching films E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 3 Aug 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 37389/70 Heading B5B In a process for quenching a thermoplastic polymeric film 14 which has been freshly extruded from a hopper 15 on to the moving surface 12 of a cooled, earthed quench drum 10 the molten film is passed in close proximity to, but out of contact with, at least one electrode 18 adapted to deposit sufficient electrostatic charge on the upper surface of the film, at the point where it first contacts the surface, to cause the film to adhere to the quenching surface, at the same time a thin film 16 of a heat conductive liquid, preferably water, is included between the film and the surface 12. Preferably the film is of polyethylene terephthalate which may be extruded at a rate of from 30 to 75 yards/min. The electrostatic pinning may be across the whole width or only at the edges of the film. The thin film of liquid 16 may be applied to the quench drum, which is earthed through earth 13 and cooled via pipe 11, by applicator 17 and removed from the cooled film by air knives 21 and 22.
