Abstract
1312456 Alkyd resins IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Oct 1970 [20 Oct 1969] 51363/69 Headings C3P and C3R An alkyd having improved styrene compatability comprises the esterification product of ethylene glycol with one or more unsaturated dibasic acids, e.g. maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic or itaconic acid or a mixture thereof, the alkyd chain containing units derived from a glycol containing a carbon chain possesing one or more pendant alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl groups, e.g. 2,3-butylene glycol, 1,2-butylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, 2,2,4 - trimethyl - 1,3 - pentanediol or 2,2,4,4- tetramethyl - 1,3 - cyclobutane diol, and being terminated by a residue derived from a monohydric alcohol or monobasic acid possessing one or more pendant alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl groups, e.g. 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanol or 3,5,5- trimethyl hexanoic acid. In examples alkyds are prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, ethylene glycol, neopentyl, propylene or 1,3-butene glycol and 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanol compositions containing 30 parts by weight of the alkyd and up to 70 parts by weight of styrene may be prepared.
