Abstract

1312152 Fermentation SANRAKU-OCEAN CO Ltd 23 July 1970 [1 Aug 1969] 35639/70 Addition to 1204524 Heading C2C [Also in Division C6] A fermentation process involves the use of a fermentation vessel comprising a stack of compartments separated by one or more perforate plates, the total perforation area of the or each plate being less than 30% of the total area of the plate where the diameter of the perforations is 2 mm. or less, and comprises introducing a culture medium and inoculation material to the vessel and continuously introducing gas in the vicinity of the bottom of the vessel during fermentation, the gas being caused to pass through the or each plate at a linear velocity greater than 2 metres per second where the perforations are more than 2 mm. in diameter, so that in any case the gas will form a layer beneath the or each plate. Example 3 relates to the production of salicylic acid by fermentation of naphthalene with Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a cylindrical fermentation vessel divided into four equal compartments. Example 4 is directed to the fermentation of n-paraffin by Nocardia sp. during passage of the broth upwardly through the six compartments of a fermentation vessel and oxidation of the product to dimethyl cis-cis muconic acid by addition of p-xylene into the fourth compartment from the bottom. The pH was held at 7À3 in the first three compartments and at 7À8 in the fourth to sixth compartments by gaseous ammonia.
