Abstract

1312097 Coated metal surface CELANESE COATINGS CO 25 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1968 (2)] 56013/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] An adherent coating of an organic polymer is formed on a metal surface by contacting with the metal surface a liquid composition comprising an oxidising mineral acid system which generates ions of the metal when in contact with the metal surface and an emulsion of a film-forming polymer, which emulsion is stabilised by an anionic or nonionic surfactant, stable to the mineral acid system and coagulated by the metal ions. The polymer may be a homopolymer of a C 1-18 alcohol ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid or a copolymer of these esters with acrylic or methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methylol acrylamide or methacrylamide, isobornyl acrylate, styrene or vinyl toluene. The mineral acid system may comprise nitric acid where the metal surface is iron, zinc or tin, or a mixture of fluoboric acid, hydrofluoric acid, chromic acid and potassium ferricyanide. The surfactant may be an alkali metal, amine or ammonium salt of a sulphonic, phosphoric or carboxylic acid having sites of polymerisable unsaturation, optionally together with other anionic or nonionic surfactants. The coating may be pigmented, e.g. with barytes, red iron oxide, titanium dioxide, magnesium silicate, calcium silicate and carbon black. The coating can be cured by baking.
