1311930 Cable joints WILHELM QUANTE SPEZIALFABRIK FUR APPARATE DER FERNMELDETECHNIK and WALTER ROSE KG 11 Nov 1910 [11 Nov 1969 23 April 1970] 53648/70 Heading H2E A protective sleeve for a cable joint, Fig. 1, comprises a pair of casing shells 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, e.g. of thermosetting plastics material, secured together by bolts 2 through flanges 3, the abutting margin portions being grooved to accommodate a thermosetting sealing composition in the form of a cord, a water-vapour barrier 21, comprising a metal foil and a thermoplastics material film, embedded in the shell walls and a thickened wall portion 16 in at least one shell for earthing pins 17 or pressure-gauge nipples. The earthing pin contacts a metal foil 18. The sealing grooves terminate near the cable inlet apertures at packing 4, defined by the discs 5, 5<SP>1</SP> in grooves 20. A stainless steel cable support ring 7 causes the slit cable sheath to be pressed on the inside shell wall 8 when the sleeve is closed. Armouring 11 is located on the cable by wire binding 10 and extends over the sleeving to be secured by clip 14. Recess 15 allows the excess armouring to be cut off easily. Pockets may be provided between the flanges 3, 3<SP>1</SP> to accept two metal plates, one of which has a threaded hole, the other acting as a backing plate, to jack the seal open by screwing a bolt through said hole, Fig. 3 (not shown). For end-to-end joints, Fig. 4, the sealing groove 38 extends into channel 40. On closing the housing the packing 4 and the sealing compound are brought into contact through the grooves 20 the packing 4 being squeezed out of groove 40 into groove 20. The packing also extends across the bridge 39 in the form of a sheet 41 when the sleeve is assembled. The water-vapour diffusion barrier is included in the shell during the pressing operation, and may be provided with longitudinal folds prior to pressing Fig. 7 (not shown). The thermoplastic film is recessed from the foil edge and the foil is arranged so as to form the base of the sealing grooves. Rams, Fig. 10 (not shown), may be used to locate the foil and the shell material during the pressing operation. A protective coating may be formed on the sleeve by a layer of powder or provided by galvanizing, sintering &c.
