Abstract

131,179. Erith's Engineering Co., and Erith, C. Aug. 29, 1918. Drying-furnaces; retort-furnaces; charging and discharging. - In apparatus for drying, carbonizing, roasting, &c. comprising a low-temperature chamber in which the materials undergo a preliminary heating operation and a high-temperature chamber in communication therewith, the two chambers are arranged end to end and in substantial alinement, and the entire heat necessary for both chambers is generated in a mechanically-fired furnace provided with means for controlling the combustion of fuel therein, and means for distributing the products of combustion to the two chambers. In an apparatus for drying and carbonizing moist fuels, the heat is generated in a furnace A, Fig. 3, fed by a mechanical stoker C of the kind described in Specifications 1067/13 and 9287/14, [both in Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustion apparatus of]. A fan D supplies air to the furnaces and by-product gas is burnt at B. A suction fan E draws the heated gases past the retorts K in the carbonizing chambers F' of the kiln F and distributes them to the drying-chamber G. An exhaust fan H withdraws the moisture-laden air from the drying- chamber. The heated gases pass down the main flue J through the chambers F' to a flue N and thence to the drying-chamber. Air may be admitted through a damper I, and communication may be established direct from the main flue J to the drying-chamber through the damper N<1>. A further supply of air may be admitted through the damper O. The material is fed through the hopper P on to a belt conveyer and is discharged through a spout Q. It is then raised by an elevator and discharged into a retort K held in a vertical position. When closed, the retort is transported in an horizontal position by a travelling crane T, Fig. 2, and is run on rails into the carbonizing-chamber F'. After treatment, the retort can be similarly transported to a point for discharging the residue. The drying chamber may contain an inclined rotary drying-cylinder fitted with buckets to shower and agitate the material as it travels down the cylinder.
